16 migrant laborers returning to their homes in Madhya Pradesh were mowed down by a goods train in Aurangabad
The incident occurred around 5:30 am within the morning on the Aurangabad-Jalna railway line
An official said the migrant workers fell asleep on the tracks because of exhaustion caused by the long journey
While 15 deaths were initially reported, the price went up after an injured laborer succumbed to injuries. The incident occurred at around 5:30 am on the Aurangabad-Jalna railway line.
An official told press agency PTI that the laborers, who had been walking along the railway tracks fell asleep because of exhaustion. The official added that they were mowed down by the train early within the morning.
The railways further clarified that the around 15 to twenty people were sleeping on the track when the incident occurred.
Authorities added that the laborers run over were natives of Umaria and Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh and were working in SRG Company in Jalna.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that he has spoken to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and asked him to watch things. Modi also ensured that each one possible assistance required is being provided.
The development comes at a time when stranded migrant laborers across the country are returning to their home states amid the nationwide lockdown.
Some of these migrant laborers were forced to steer long distances to their home states as they were unable to seek out transport.
While states have allowed special trains to move migrant laborers, some are still finding it hard to check-in for an equivalent.
Meanwhile, many other migrant laborers had already began on foot before to succeed in their homes before the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) came out with the order allowing migrant laborers to return home.

The Railways has also clarified that they were getting to their home town in Madhya Pradesh, not Chhattisgarh)
